The Legend of the Piave, also known as The Song of the Piave, (national anthem from 1943 to 1946) is one of the most famous Italian patriotic songs. It was written in 1918 by Ermete Giovanni Gaeta (known under the pseudonym E.A. Mario).

(“The Legend of the Piave” first verses)
“The Piave murmured calm and placid at the passing. Of the first infantrymen on May twenty-fourth; The Army headed to the frontier, To form a barrier against the enemy. The soldiers crossed silently that night; They had to remain in silence and go forward. Meanwhile from the beloved river banks we heard the low, gentle exultation of the waves: It was a sweet and propitious omen. The Piave murmured: “the foreigner shall not pass”.
